Carla Shatz: Gleaning insights into how the brain operates

The Shatz lab studies the visual systems of mammals, employing a variety of approaches, ranging from molecular biology to slice electrophysiology to in vivo imaging to behavior.  The research has relevance not only for understanding brain wiring and developmental disorders such as Autism and Schizophrenia, but also for understanding how the nervous and immune systems interact. Carla Shatz, PhD is the Sapp Family Provostial Professor, the David Starr Jordan Director of Stanford Bio-X and a professor of biology and neurobiology.
