Stanford Medical Center Development takes over fundraising operations of Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare
Six years after the initial merger of Stanford Medicine and ValleyCare, the process was completed when, on June 30, ValleyCare Charitable Foundation members approved the vote to merge their operations with Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare.
The vote means that Stanford’s Office of Medical Center Development will assume responsibility for the development and philanthropic operations and activities in support of Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare fundraising. The Office of Medical Center Development is responsible for all fundraising at Stanford Medicine, supporting research at the School of Medicine as well as clinical programs at Stanford Health Care.

The 242-bed Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare community hospital has served the Tri-Valley region of Amador, Livermore and San Ramon valleys and the surrounding communities for nearly 60 years. It has a dedicated community of donors who value and support its mission.
The merger of ValleyCare and Stanford Health Care in 2015 was a strategic affiliation to acquire a regional health system and providers with deep roots in community-based medicine. It has proven to be a successful partnership, bringing together the expertise and excellence of East Bay physicians with the innovative strength of Stanford Health Care’s specialized programs.
Rick Shumway, Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare president and CEO, says the merging of its fundraising operations with Stanford Medical Center Development will add significant resources to the community.
“Stanford Medical Center Development’s highly trained team of experienced fundraising professionals is exceptionally robust,” says Shumway. “This merger will bring additional support to our community around philanthropic and development activities for the hospital. It will help us raise even more money to bring vital programs and services to our region.”
Over the past six years, both organizations have received numerous awards. Most recently, both Stanford Health Care and Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare received excellent patient safety grades from the Leapfrog Group, a leading watchdog organization. Each hospital received an A grade for avoiding medical errors and other preventable harm from December 2020 to April 2021 — the months with their highest numbers of COVID-19 patients.

ValleyCare has grown from a small community hospital in Livermore to a complex of health care facilities in Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin. The ValleyCare Charitable Foundation was instrumental in funding the effort for SHC – ValleyCare to become a primary stroke center in 2019 and in providing ongoing support for modern equipment, technology and services.

With the merger, ValleyCare Charitable Foundation’s current fund balance will transition to SHC – ValleyCare , and Stanford Medical Center Development to continue to support Stanford Health Care-ValleyCare hospital priorities.
